The Bass Cake Discusses the Top 5 Sets of Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

This week, we will be discussing the pros and cons of five of the biggest sets at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, which occurred from March 2-5, 2023 in Okeechobee, Florida.

Earth, Wind and Fire

Earth, Wind and Fire was easily the most anticipated set of the weekend and they did not disappoint! The set started out with some confusion, because Big Boi's flight got delayed. This meant that Earth, Wind and Fire got to play an hour early. Many people were unaware of this change, so the Bass Cake family were able to get all the way up to the front row. The performance was one of a lifetime. EWF had the whole crowd grooving! Their performance was the greatest I have ever seen.

Pros:

  • Great crowd control

  • The hits and lesser known songs were played equally

  • The visuals showed lots of their shows from the 70's and 80's

Cons:

  • Slight confusion with Big Boi's flight delay, but it worked out well.

Overall Rating: 10 out of 10

Big Boi

Big Boi was my second most anticipated set at Okeechobee. He had a very well-rounded set which included his ever-popular hits from Outkast as well as recent music from his personal discography. From hits such as Ms. Jackson to So Fresh, So Clean, Big Boi brought all the energy. I was personally not familiar with much of his work after Outkast, but his performance encouraged me to look into his personal discography. My favorite part of his set was when he closed his set by playing International Players Anthem. Despite his delayed flight, Big Boi performance was one for the history books.

Pros:

  • Best rapper I have ever seen live

  • He played Ms. Jackson, So Fresh, So Clean, All Night, and International Player's Anthem

  • The visuals were very crisp and he showed music videos

Cons:

  • He had a flight delay (out of his control)

Overall Rating: 9 out of 10

Blunts & Blondes

Blunts & Blondes put on an amazing dubstep set at 1 AM on Sunday morning. I had previously seen him two or three times before, but his set at Okeechobee was definitely the best I had ever seen him. For an hour, he played some of the best remixes and ID's (unreleased songs without a official name) that I had never heard. My personal favorite was Sublime - Santeria (Blunts & Blondes Remix). Blunts & Blondes continues to get better every time I see him, and I cannot wait to see him again!

Pros:

  • Great remixes and ID's

  • Santeria and Pretty Rave Girl Remix

  • The lights and visuals were not over-the-top, but rather a great show of minimalism and letting the music be the focus

Cons:

  • I had a perfect time at his set. This was a prime example of how to have a dubstep set.

Overall Rating: 10 out of 10

Lil Yacthy

Lil Yachty had a very interesting set at Okeechobee. The set started off with an intense intro featuring Drake, however, things went downhill after that. For 10 minutes, Yachty was singing into his mic, but nothing was coming out. Once he found out, he threw his mic down and stormed off stage. The crowd just stood there wondering if he would even perform now due to the error. However, he restarted his performance 10 minutes later and put on a wonderful show. He had a live band behind him and the visuals were some of the best I had ever seen. I did not know many songs off his new album, but Yachty and his band brought the vibes. I was slightly disappointed that he did not play any of his old hits, but it is understandable due to the 20 minutes of errors in the beginning.

Pros:

  • Amazing visuals

  • His band and backup singers were top-tier

  • He played most of his new album for the first time (world premiere)

Cons:

  • Vocal bus and mic problems for the first 20 minutes

  • No "old hits" because of the 20 minutes restart

Overall Rating: 8 out of 10

JPEGMAFIA

JPEGMAFIA is a rapper that preformed on Sunday night at Okeechobee. I had heard some songs, but was not super familiar with his discography. I was not expecting too much. However, he brought so much energy. He was performing at the same time as Yheti (dubstep artist), so their crowd was not very packed. That did not matter though. If you were at JPEGMAFIA, you were in for a show. He had the biggest moshpit I had ever seen and was running all of the stage. You could tell that he was very hyped to be there. He would constantly get up to the rail to rap with his fans and shoutout different people. My favorite songs he played included BALD and Call Me Maybe.

Pros:

  • Lots of energy

  • Lots of space due to the moshpit and Yheti set

  • Crowd interaction

Cons:

  • His set time seemed short, but it was most likely due to how much energy he put into it.

Overall Rating: 9 out of 10

In conclusion, Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival featured many world class acts with unbelievable performances. I never thought I would be able to see some of the artists that I was able to see. I can not wait until OMF 2024, and the surprises that will await.
